Vestibular Schwannoma(VS) Microsurgery

Vestibular schwannoma (acoustic neuroma) is located between the brainstem and cerebellum and surrounded by the superior vestibular nerve sheath, thus it is the most difficult brain tumor which needs the most challenging surgical technique. In order to prevent the recurrence of tumor, to remove the tumor completely is the most important and at the same time, preserving facial nerve function and hearing should be throughly considered to improve quality of life postoperatively.
In particular, for hearing preservation complicated surgical maneuvers are necessary and based on over 250 cases of surgical experiences, the Department of Neurosurgery at Chonnam National University Hwasun Hospital has showed the world-class achievement, indicating that facial nerve preservation was 82.4% and total hearing preservation rate was 53.3%. Especially, among vestibular schwannoma smaller than 25 mm, facial nerve preservation rate was 95.7% and total hearing preservation rate was 78.9%.
